Yesterday our little girl choked on a piece of apple.
It was quite honestly one of the most terrifying moments of my life and that’s coming from someone who’s basically scared of everything. I was on the phone to my Mum when I heard her making some odd noises.
Choking isn’t like I’ve seen in the movies – mainly because it was silent. She just made some gulping noise and slowly went very red in the face.
I dropped the phone and gave her a pat on the back but nothing happened and then I remembered seeing this little video a while back that told you what to do if a child was choking. I put her across my lap and upside down and gave her some hard whacks on the back and within seconds the piece of apple flew across the room.
She ran off and I carried on talking to my Mum and it was only in the evening when I was telling my husband that I realised how scary that moment was. It was like the mist cleared from my memory and I saw how different that moment could have been.
This was the video I saw that let me know what to do – it’s only a minute or so long but without it I wouldn’t have had such a clear picture in my brain of what I needed to do to help her.
Please take a couple of seconds to watch it – a couple of seconds could have made all the difference today.
I’m going to watch it again and then add apples to the list of things that legitimately scare the crap out of me.
Please watch it. Please watch the video so if it comes about you‘ll know what to do as well.
