Couch to 5k – Week 2

I went for my first run of week two today – this week instead of walking for 90 seconds and running for 60 seconds I’m now doing 90 second runs and 2 minute walks.

Some observations on today’s run include

You really notice that extra 30 seconds

This kicked in for me especially around the 5th run and on the 6th run I didn’t make the full 90 seconds. I was only 30 seconds shy though so I made up those missing seconds at the end of the podcast

What you are wearing counts

You can run in leggings and an old t-shirt with a kids bottle of water in your hand but you really need decent shoes and a good sports bra. For the first time today I really felt it in my ankles while I was running and was very thankful I’d invested in a better pair of trainers to do this in. They didn’t cost a million pounds (£44 in fact) but I think if I’d done it in my old trainers I might have hurt my feet today.

It’s not a race

There is a huge temptation to try and keep up with people around you or run at the pace you used to when you were a teenager. Don’t. Today I was overtaken by an old man walking what appeared to be an old dog because I was running so slowly (it was the 5th run I mentioned earlier) but I resisted the urge to let my pride and ego take over and just realised by body was telling me it needed to take this interval slowly.

Gnats taste bad

Nothing more I can add to this really apart from the fact I know understand why people look so serious while they are running. It’s not because they are it’s just because they are trying to keep the insects out of their mouth.

The podcast music is awful

As in really bad. There is one section on the second or third run where it dissolves into something that almost sounds like the theme to a children’s TV show. Jazz hands whilst running is a fun combination

So that’s the first day of week two done and while I’m not looking forward to going out on Wednesday I’m hoping it’ll go a little better then that it did today. I’ve increased from 8 minutes in total running to 10 minutes which is great so I’m just trying to concentrate on the positive for the moment.

This weeks This Girl Can poster is an accidental selfie I took while taking a breather and trying to check my messages. Seems suitably sweaty and tired though so I’m keeping it.

I shall have to reinstall the app on my phone, but can’t you play your own music and have the app talk over this rather than listen to whatever crap they have pre-loaded? I would hope so…..

If you load the NHS Choices CT5K app on your iPhone it’ll play a selection of your own music. It’s only the podcast that has that terrible music on 🙂
